What we want
This is our demand: “Coal is for barbecue only. Decarbonize the world economy now!” We are setting a very precise goal: An economy that flourishes without burning fossil fuels like oil, coal or those nasty tar-sands in Canada. Our politicians have to set the rules so that the world economy can make this technological change. Technological shifts have been made before: People pretty much stopped using steam engines and horse carriages. It turned out cars and electrical trains are nicer. Most of you stopped using vhs and now love your dvds. So us humans have mastered these paradigm shifts before, we know how to do this. Now we just have to do it on a global scale, the west has to stop using fossil fuels, the emerging economies need to leapfrog to renewables directly. We could wait for this to happen slowly but we have no time. The earth’s ecosystems are too fragile for that.
So we don’t know how the world can be powered by only wind, solar, geothermal energy and biofuels. That is for the experts in universities, ministries and companies to figure out. We are just the citizens of this world saying: Do it now. Do it fast. We need you. You have our support.
